LEARN HOW RETIREMENT

IS ACTUALLY

"HONORABLE UNEMPLOYMENT"

WHY UNEMPLOYMENT

IN OUR SOCIETY IS

A MAJOR TRAUMATIC EVENT

If you are planning to retire soon, or you know someone who is – You need to know about this!  Ignorance is never bliss.  “Forewarned is forearmed, ”, “A stitch in time saves nine!” and, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”

Why we are calling Retirement

“Honorable Unemployment”?

What is behind the statistic that CALPERS, which handles the pension plans for the State of California, said that up to 30% of their pension checks stop getting cashed after only 18 months,… a year and a half?  Now, why are people not cashing those checks? You could have another job, you could win the lottery, you could be living in Mexico “high off the hog”. You could still cash those checks. You're entitled to them. Matter of fact, most people in the system have to cash those checks for ten years before they get back out what they put in. So why is it that after only 18 months, up to 30% of those people stop cashing the checks? Any ideas, here?  Too lazy? No, I don't think so…  They're dead! The sad truth is that they are dead. And it's not just State of California employees. In the aerospace industry recently there was a study done including Lockheed and Boeing. The timeframe on that was 13 months from retirement to the grave! I just recently talked to a retired postal employee and they said that it's very common knowledge that people talk about others dying off six (6) months after they leave the postal service, and a retired Phone Company worker told me much the same.

Who are talking about here?  THE BABY BOOMERS!!  -- the largest, wealthiest, most educated, most innovative, most curious, and biggest risk-taking segment of the U.S. Population, - over 78 Million, and counting!  Probably YOU, or people you know.

CASE STUDY –

“Life after 30 years with the State of California”

I first became interested in this phenomenon called "retirement" which I see as "honorable unemployment". When a dear friend of my mine who had worked over 30 years for the State of California was getting ready to retire and every time she talked about a retirement, she got anxious. I mean, I could notice an actual physical difference. And I started wondering what's going on here? So I paid attention to it and I came to realize that she was scared! Now what could she be scared about? She was going to retire with lifetime medical benefits, for her and her family, with her pension, and she figured her pension was going come in at 89% of her current salary. That's not too shabby. So what was the problem?

I started thinking about it. I started listening to some of the things she was saying and it was "What am I going do when I don't have the office to go into? Who am I going be when I am no longer Alice Smith, DPA Information Systems Supervisor? When am I going to get to see all my dear friends at work?"

These are just some of the things that were going on. Once again, that she really couldn't put her finger on, but those were the things that were going on in the back of her head. Also, she was having difficulty getting up and going into work, and she loved her job, and she loved the people she worked with. So there was definitely a problem there.

To me this looked like a job for “super coach”. So I started with the idea to coach her, but one has to be very careful coaching family members and close friends. Actually most of the time we are advised to not even think of it.

So I went about it very gingerly and I started off by saying "Well Alice, what would you like your retirement to look like?" And she said, "Well, the first six months I'm not going do a thing." I kind of laughed, I said, "Well okay, you deserve that. You know, what is doing nothing going look like?" "Well, I'm going to play with the grandkids, visit with my kids, tend my garden, and play more Bunko, and, um, travel."

I said, "Oh cool. That's a good idea. Where would you like to go? Where would you like to travel?" She said, "Well, I've heard Costa Rica's really interesting, and it's really a nice place." I said, "Yeah, I spent some time there and it's really wonderful."

So what we ended up doing was planning a month long vacation for her, starting almost immediately after her retirement party. What this would do is create a little buffer zone. She would go away on a month long vacation so that on Monday morning when she woke up there wouldn't be this nagging feeling that she had to go into the office. And, it was a reward for her long years of service, a really good reward, not just a gold watch and a nice dinner.

Now I knew that she needed, or she wanted some additional income, supplemental income to her pension, to be able to support her lifestyle and make sure that she paid for her son finishing college. So we needed to address what she was going do to make some extra money. So, I asked her, "Well Alice, you know if you do want work some after you retire, and you could do anything you wanted to, what would it be?" And she said, "Well, just look around." And I went, "Oh yeah."

See, this was a woman whose house looked like it should be in “Better Homes and Gardens”.  It was a modest house, but everything looked terrific and she was very conscientious about her decorating. And the outside of her house was the same thing. Her garden was wonderful and had terrific fruits and vegetables and flowers beyond belief. And her front yard was so nice that people had actually stopped while driving by, if she was out front working on her yard and comment to her how much they enjoyed driving by and seeing her yard.

So I said, "Well, that's great. How would you feel about starting a little decorating business?" She said, "Well yeah, I'd like that and I've done that for a couple people, but I didn't charge them, of course. I said, "Well, you know, you're good enough and you really should be charging them, and this is how you could supplement your income." And she said, "Yeah, well that that's and idea. I'll think about that." And then, just by chance, she was refinancing her house at this time, and I was there when the bank had sent over a mobile notary. Now, neither one of us had heard of a mobile notary before, it's a notary that comes to your house or your place of business. And she started talking to this notary and found that it was something that she could do, it didn't take a whole lot of training and it had a very flexible schedule, and it made decent money.

And later on when we were talking about it said "You know Richard, this is something I could do, besides that, being a native Sacramentan, I have a lot of contacts in real estate and in banking and those are the places that use notaries the most." I said, "Yeah, I said, that's an excellent idea."

So what that did for her was to alleviate some of that anxiety over retiring. She wasn't wondering what she was going do, and she had something to look forward to after she wasn't going into work. So, she even mentioned to me about a week later, "Well, I don't know what happened, but I'm not just as anxious about retiring anymore. Matter of fact, I can go into work now and it's not bothering me. I was having a time there where I was having trouble getting into, going into work."

Now, she loved her job and she loved the people that she worked with. So once again, looking at planning her retirement alleviated some of that stress and it turns out that it made her more relaxed and a better worker for those last six months before she was due to retire.

“I attended Coach Lyon’s delightful presentation last year and it has stuck in my mind ever since, making me smile.   Coach Lyon managed to make the prospect of creating a rewarding/fun life after retirement as real as concocting a delicious secret recipe chocolate sauce (which he did right before our very eyes).  What's even better, as we got to consider what ingredients would go into our "honorable unemployment" life, we also got to taste a to-die-for chocolate sauce.  Coach Lyon is a born entertainer and has used his considerable creativity to get his message across.”

LEARN TO RECOGNIZE THE SUBTLE PSYCHOLOGICAL

AND EMOTIONAL TRAUMAS THAT YOU MAY

EXPERIENCE FROM "JOB LOSS"

WHAT HIDDEN DANGERS LURK IN “HONORABLE UNEMPLOYMENT”?

Now I'm not going be talking about financials here. There are plenty of financial advisors out there giving very good advice. I'm going talk about what I call the ‘meat and potatoes of life’, …(A little chef thing), and that's your day to day life --and that's where things seem to fall apart for those folks who end up in an early grave. So after a lifetime of being a productive citizen in a major longtime career, all of a sudden people are unemployed. Yes, retirement is “honorable unemployment” and in our society unemployment ranks psychologically and emotionally on the same level as a traumatic experience with loss of a loved one through death, with loss of a major relationship like a divorce, with a major uprooting like moving. It has the same kind of impact and I see parallels between some of the things that happen to people and those major traumas.

*LOSS OF PROFESSIONAL OR WORK IDENTITY

Well, you don't have your title anymore, your job, your professional or work identity. Now to some people, that's their only identity. They don't realize that they're more than just their work, or their job.

Let’s say you’re Tom Smith, head ranger for Big Sequoia State Park. One day you’re in charge of thousands of acres of beautiful, beautiful country, including some prehistoric trees, incredible trees. You’re in charge of dozens of employees, millions of dollars worth of facilities, the guests, and yes, even the bears. The next day after you get the gold watch and the retirement dinner, your biggest responsibility might be making your own breakfast and… that's really a downsizing! It's a huge blow to your psyche and your ego. And no one is really talking about this, and it is much like losing a Loved one – That person You were for so long at Work!

It happens, even to people who are highly self-motivated and very intelligent --and have other plans firmly in mind. A woman I know from church sold her insurance agency after building it up for 30 years. One day she was Kathy, owner of this big insurance agency, the next day she was “just Kathy”.  And, she said that it felt very strange and very disconcerting.

In my case, I was Chef Lyon for 27 years and when I left culinary, I didn't think of myself that way anymore.  Now sometimes around town, I'm walking into a restaurant and hear somebody say "Hi, Chef Lyon", it's one of my former students.

But I always do a double take because I don't think of myself as Chef Lyon anymore, because I'm doing something else now.

*LOSS OF SOCIAL CIRCLE

So what else happens to people? You don't get to see your friends and co-workers, you loose their social circle. Those people that you've been seeing twenty to thirty years perhaps, eight to ten hours a day, five to six days a week, you see them even more than you see your own family and now all of a sudden they're cut off from you. Oh, yeah, you can go back and you can always visit, and everybody's always happy to see you, "Oh, hi Rich, how you doing? Good? Yeah, how's the family? You know. What have you been doing?" But after a little while what's gonna to happen is they're gonna say "Uh, hey, listen, I gotta get back to work. You know how the boss is." And so what happens is YOU feel like they're an outcast from your own tribe, and this is quite disconcerting.  This feels a lot like a Divorce!

The flip side of the coin is, if there is a significant other at home, all of a sudden it goes from maybe a little in the morning, and after work in the evenings, weekends and maybe vacations to “24/7 in your face”. Now for some people this is no problem, actually it's wonderful. However, I've been speaking to some psychologists and they tell me that this is a big problem in our society today where one or both of the people retire and all of a sudden they are together way more than they have ever been and they have to get to know each other again. For the one who’s been at home, their ‘territory’ has been invaded, and all those little things that have been swept under the rug and left there because there's no time to deal with them, all of a sudden, there's way too much time.

*LOSS OF DAILY ROUTINE

Ok, what else? Yeah, you don't have to go to work anymore, you loose that physical routine that you have stuck to for twenty to thirty years. So we’ve got people that are all woke up -- and no place to go at 6:30 in the morning,. Now, you know, somebody will say, "Well, I just roll over and go back to sleep." Yes, but unfortunately your body's gonna wake you up soon anyways because your body's just used to getting up and going at that time, getting into your daily routine. This can be very disconcerting and after awhile, it can even get to be depressing, if not handled. So you loose your physical schedule, and the physical schedule, your daily routine, is kind of like being uprooted, like moving, because you are no long spending time in that home away from home, that you have spent more time than actually at home. This can be very disconcerting and can cause a lot of anxiety and stress.

*LOSS OF OUTLETS FOR CREATIVE

AND PRODUCTIVE ENERGIES

Well, there is one other major thing that I like to look at, and that's the fact that you loose your outlet for your creative and productive energies. And in our society, these things are very, very strongly engrained in us. When we were kids, we were always encouraged to do what we're supposed to do and do it good. From Kindergarten on up, we’re told to “DO”, and “DO MORE”, and “DO BETTER”.  And all of a sudden they are told to STOP – “Take it Easy”, and WHAM, you have no outlet for these energies. Nothing is demanding it from you. Especially if you are on a pension, you don't even have to get up and worry about looking for work. So this is very important to us, and to some people in our society, it is their total reason for existing – what they DO.

So unless these things are addressed, and handled, they can lead to disorientation, boredom, apathy, and depression, that can show up in forms such as drug or alcohol abuse, food abuse, people abuse, and can turn into lots of daytime TV, with the junk food that goes with it, both of which are unhealthy and negative, taking their health down hill on roller skates, -- and these are the links that lead to that premature death of those 30% of CALPERS and those people in the aerospace industry and lots of other people.

For my presentation, I appear in my chef outfit, with a wire whisk, and ask, "Who can guess what I did for 27 years before retiring?" Then, as a retired chef, now a Coach, I talk about Retirement as "Honorable Unemployment", and some of the issues people face that are just not commonly discussed, much less sensibly dealt with, and some of the rather disturbing statistics around retirement and mortality. Many people retiring go through a great deal of stress - most of which is just not openly being addressed. I relate how retirement has in it the elements of some of the most traumatic events in our culture. These include, Death of a Loved One, as in the loss of Professional/Work Identity; loss of a major relationship, (e.g. divorce), as in the loss of their Social Circle; Major Uprooting - (e.g. moving), loss of Daily Routine; and finally, the loss of outlets for their Creative and Productive energies. All of these can happen at once creating a very stressful situation, which if not sensibly handled can lead to disorientation and depression. This often leads to an unhealthy lifestyle, and an early grave! (There are some very shocking statistics to confirm this.)  Then, I "Chocolate Coat" the bitter message by actually making my world renowned Chocolate Sauce, and relating the individual ingredients in the sauce to "ingredients" in a "Recipe for a Happier, Longer Life in Retirement".  Finally, I treat the audience to the Chocolate Sauce with fruit and cookies.

So, what I deliver is fun, out-of-the ordinary, entertaining, and informative with a powerful message for pre-retirees, retirees,

and their adult children as well.

My mission is to educate the public about the potential pitfalls of Retirement.  I know that simple awareness can be curative - if YOU know what's coming, then, YOU can prepare for it!  So, what I deliver is fun, out-of-the ordinary, entertaining, and informative with a powerful message for pre-retirees, and their adult children as well.  In hosting this presentation, you let your employees know that you care about them even after their active service, which can improve performance as they near retirement, and contribute to better overall employee morale.

“I recently had the opportunity to attend Coach Lyon's "Recipe for Retirement" presentation.  I found it to be informative, well-organized and entertaining.  Coach Lyon's tying in of his expertise of being a world-class chef brought a unique perspective to his message of how to have a rewarding life in retirement, and kept my attention throughout the entire presentation. His comparing cooking ingredients to different aspects of improving one's quality of life in retirement (as he mixed them together to create his world-renowned chocolate sauce) had a strong impact. His use of stories to illustrate key points, especially stories involving celebrities he has cooked for, also added to the impact of his presentation.

I would highly recommend Coach Lyon's "Recipe for Retirement" presentation to any audience.”

“Creating Your Recipe for a

Happier, Longer Life in Retirement”

Pre-Retirement Coaching is a must for “Baby Boomers” going into Retirement. Even with ‘financials’ in good shape, it is not the happy, care-free life that “they” said it would be. There are too many disturbing statistics about retirees and premature death. The more I studied the phenomenon I call “Honorable Unemployment”, and its pitfalls, the more I became convinced my mission is to bring greater awareness to people headed in that direction. I know simple awareness is often curative. As a retired Chef, it was natural for me to see a correlation between the ingredients and preparation of a gourmet recipe, such as my world renowned Chocolate Sauce, and the elements of a balanced, fulfilling Retirement. Through this metaphor, I urge you, as my clients, to keep in mind your Values and your Life’s Purpose to bring Balance and Joy to these vital areas:

•Physical      •Mental        •Emotional      •Social       •Spiritual

Dear Richard,

Great job! I am so glad you have hit on a much needed topic. I really liked your presentation using your background as a Chef to convey your message. Bravo!  I wish you all the success.  -- Quinta Howe, Real Estate Investor
